At Birchwood, out-of-camp wilderness adventures are offered each week. Girls are not required to go on a trip during their stay, but are encouraged to give it a try. A camping trip in the great outdoors is a memorable time for all!

Trips are offered according to age and ability. No experience is necessary for any of our shorter trips. Trips are announced several days prior to departure in the dining hall. If a camper is interested in the trip, she meets with the counselors after meal time to discuss the trip. If it sounds great, campers sing up and begin trip preparations over the next couple days! Examples of some trips we offer are:

  1. An overnight biking trip on a paved trail to/from a campsite near Walker, Minnesota
  2. A 2 to 3-day canoeing trip down the Mississippi River
  3. A one-night camping adventure at nearby Gus’s Grove
  4. A 2-day kayaking trip to Star Island inside of Cass Lake
  5. A day-long outing to Itasca State Park to bike and see the headwaters of the Mississippi River

We also offer longer trips for older girls (usually those who have finished 8th grade). These adventures require basic skills and some stamina. Most of these trips begin and end at our boys’ camp called Birchwood for Boys, which sits at the end of the Gunflint Trail past Grand Marais, Minnesota. If girls meet the requirements for this trip (or are willing to gain the skills necessary prior to departure) they must meet with our Wilderness Director during their first week of camp. These adventures are only available to 4-week campers. Examples of these trips are:

  1. A week-long canoeing trip in the Boundary Water Canoe Wilderness Area on the border of Minnesota and Canada
  2. A 5-day hiking trip on the Superior Hiking Trail along the north shore of Lake Superior
  3. A 2 to 3 day rock climbing adventure in Northern Minnesota, including the Palisade Head near Silver Bay
